Dieselpunk + Steampunk Culture
Are mad scientists dead?
In my mind, I have this huge Dieselpunk world where you have gangsters, zeppelins, heroes, and of course...MAD SCIENTISTS! But I haven't seen or heard anything of such recently. Dr. Horrible was able to bring them back in a small way, but I haven't seeen or heard of any evil geniuses other than him. Are they dead? Is there any way to bring them back?

Ditto here. I'm more the "vaguely annoyed" variety. I'm more of a mad artist anyway...

Mad science speaks to a fear of the changes wrought on society by scientific discovery. As a culture, we're not so scared of that anymore. It's more the social sciences that seem to be triggering the fear and paranoia--multiculturalism, plural societies, differing value systems, etc. seem to be bringing out the fear in people. We have come to trust in science...maybe too much over nature. The only thing we don't do for science anymore is fund it enough (it takes a lot of capital to attend those "evil laughter" courses).

The thing about mad scientists these days is that they're not independent guys working from lighthouse laboratories -- they're part of whole mad R&D departments in fully-funded corporate environments. 100 years ago, a mad scientist had to develop a zombie virus by himself, pour it into the river and hope the farming villages downstream would suffer the consequences. Nowadays an international team can develop the same virus, market it as a wrinkle cream, lobby for the FDA to lower their testing standards and infect the whole hemisphere in three days. Indie guys just don't stand a chance anymore, such a shame.

Well, in my novel, I have a character and Nikola Tesla pursuing a path of "Mad Scientistry." They even attempt to get Einstein to join them. :P
