Dieselpunks

Dieselpunk + Steampunk Culture

From: Robert Donnell

This is more a philosophical question how do you make a costume look Dieselpunk? Steampunk is easy Victorian plus Sci-Fi. Logically if you mix 1940s plus Sci-fi you get today. For example the Nazis took the World War One era M-16 helmet and modernized (shrank and streamlined) it to the M-35 helmet, slapped on a high-technology camouflage cover and that was their look, the modern helmets we have today look almost exactly the same as the Stahlhelm 35. Very little we have today is more advanced looking than 1940s stuff. All military guns look a lot like the MP-44 assault rifle.

So what I was thinking was for a Steampunk helmet you take a Star Wars helmet add rivets and paint it brass. So for Dieselpunk what about taking a WWII steel pot (USA M-1 helmet) and add clunky steel/chrome helmet accessories, paint it black and add a big stenciled insignia. Altho such a thing would look very odd to someone from the 1940s it would be over the top enough to be obviously Dieselpunk.

What do you think?

If you're leaning towards the "punk" side of dieselpunk military fashion, it might end up looking like Tank Girl.

Take the M-1 helmet for instance. Worn by itself, it's pretty punk. You don't see a lot of people on the streets today wearing military helmets. Add in some DIY updates, like paint or a chrome spiked mohawk, and that pushes it over the top.

Personally, I stop at stage 1. I'm not as concerned about costuming as I am about enjoying the aesthetic in general. If I wouldn't wear it out of my house on a daily basis, I'm not going to put resources towards it.
I wasn't thinking Punk I had in mind Sky Pirates or Wierd War Two.

For example if Reality = Ice Tea then Dieselpunk = Long Island Ice Tea. Does that make sense?

Somewhat over the top.
It makes sense. I'd like to hear how the others feel about their fashions.

Question for Dieselpunks - When it comes to dieselpunk fashion, what's do you like to wear?
This is my wife and I, on the left with a nice chap we met on Halloween. My rocket pack and helmet were nowhere near being completed.

And the Der Fliegende Igel crew.

Hear ye, hear ye!

I declare WWII headphones shall from this point onward be the dieselpunk version of steampunk goggles.

Let it be so!
I second the motion, all in favor say aye!
I would LOVE to get a group together in matching uniforms like that. Good job! Especially to the hot cabaret-esque ladies. (And epic chops on der Hauptmann, btw.) What a fun zeppelin that must be.

Did you guys have a dieselpunk-themed Halloween party?
To me it would pretty much be the same as for steampunk. Like Tome said, start with a basic look from the 20's, 30's or 40's, and then riff it with some DIY touches if you want to go "over the top".

And it also depends on if you want to go "alternate future" like Samuel Crowe and his friends above, or "post apocalyptic" like the Tank Girl/Mad Max look.
I thought DieselPunk was alternate 1900-1950s?
Ah, you've stumbled onto the great debate, lol. There are two "flavors" of dieselpunk. One is the alternate history style, the other is the post-apocalyptic/dystopian style.
The age of steam usually bumps into the age of diesel shortly after The Great War. That's why you see a lot more military garb in dieselpunk fashion.
aye aye
