I wear it for formal occasions only. Have a kind of dislike for ties since I was in high school where a tie was made obligatory about a year and a half before the graduation.
However I must admit some people look smart wearing a tie.
What about you?

Permalink Reply by David Andrews on May 26, 2011 at 8:20am Although wearing ties at school was mandatory it never put me off, although i admit that I've only really started to wear them since the proliferation of 'skinny' ties in shops in the last few years.
Having had a slew of jobs where I could wear whatever I wanted (within reason) I've worn a tie more and more. The shirt and tie makes me feel professional, plus the skinny ties I tend towards add a modern element to the whole outfit that stops me simply looking like a re-enactor (nowt wrong with that, but I prefer to mix the past with the present, as is the Dieselpunk ethos!)
I imagine that there would be quite a difference in feeling about ties based upon country and social custom.
A decade ago, I had a job that required it. Now, it's just for special occasions. At the Maker Faire, I picked up the red one of these. Very dieselpunk, I thought.

Permalink Reply by Markus Glanzer on May 28, 2011 at 11:03am The problem I allways experience, when trying to buy a tie, is that if you go shopping (this may vary in different countries) you only get those broad cut ties (about 3-4 inch wide, like they wore in the 70's), allways patterned... I am desperately trying to get a slim, only black tie (in respect of the 1920's) but there's allmost no chance to ever get one.
Same problem with suspenders, they are mainly too broad, and patterned, as well as you only get suspenders with an "X" shaped back, but no "Y" shapeds.
All those problems get bigger, when you are of slim body type, where you allready got problems buying men's clothes.
The next problem, that comes to mind is combination... wearing a tie, suspenders and a west seems not very good, since it's getting way too much. How do you combine this stuff?

I'm not sure which countries they ship to, but 'Topman' do great skinny ties and minimal colour/pattern braces at the moment (www.topman.com).
The braces they do are pretty much all 'X' shaped, with clips (rather than buttons, making them suspenders technically) so they have to go over your shirt, which solves that conundrum.
As for all these items looking too much when combined: if your tie/braces/shirt combination is made up of subdued hues and 'skinny' designs then it won't look 'too much' - I sympathise with the wish to channel the dieselpunk style of dress into my wardrobe without looking like a cartoon character! Mostly you just need to experiment and find out what works for you.
Topman is also really good if you're slim, since it basically caters for the teenage / early twenties market in that shape - mostly very tailored clothes.
Hope this helps!
(P.s. H&M are good for the above items too, but you can't purchase their clothes online in most countries - I've also heard that ASOS have good variety, although I've personally never shopped from them.)
