Greetings, fellow Steamers and DieselPunks! My name is Lewis Williamson, and I live down in Irving, TX. I am currently a senior at Ranchview High School. I graduate June 5th, and I will be going to DeVry University in July. I will be taking classes in Game and Simulation Programming, and I will be majoring in Beta Testing.
My hobbies include drawing, playing video games, watching TV and movies, and voice acting. My favourite directors are Tim Burton and Guillermo del Toro, and my favourite film is Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. My favourite video games are the Sly Cooper series, Valkyria Chronicles, Dead Space, BioShock, and Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
I love to browse the internet to find new communities and people to share my opinons with; which is exaclty how I ended up here!

I saw that you're going to hit DeVry after school. Do you have any of your own games outlined yet? It's a good time for small studios right now thanks to XBox Live and Playstation Online, so you have a great shot at getting your work published.

...I have some ideas; some obviously of the steam/dieselpunk variety, but I haven't had any solid theories on game mechanics or things like that, only characters and story.

That's a good place to start. Unless you're into logic puzzles, making an engaging game is no different than telling a good story. Brush up on the styles you like and start framing out ideas from there.
