Dieselpunks

Dieselpunk + Steampunk Culture

Someone posted on FB that since June 14th is International Steampunk Day (which I didn't know) shouldn't there be an International Dieselpunk Day and if so what date.

I was thinking November 12th since it's the day after Armistice Day for World War I. My reasoning being that traditionally the end of The Great War has been the start of the Diesel Era for Dieselpunk.

My other thought was when the RPG Children of the Sun was released since it was for the game that Lewis Pollak coined the term 'Dieselpunk.' The oldest report I can find is that Mr. Piecraft found that Pollak used the term in an interview on November 19th in 2001.

That still places it within the month of November.

Any other ideas for anyone?

I like the idea of it being November 12th.

November 12th sounds good to me. Either that or 11.03am on 11th November ;)

That's why I recommended Nov 12th. For me Nov 11th is too sacred and it would be disrespectful to choose Nov 11th.

I agree with the day after armistice day. Plus that day would be easy to remember and easy to explain.

I'm good with Nov. 12th.

Same, November 12th works for me. Great idea Larry! So what exactly do you have in mind when it comes to what people would be doing on IDPD?

Great Idea! about 12/11. And we can add sinking Tirpitz, Frisco Bay Bridge and Loch Ness Monster to the date:)

Thanks for the extra events for that date, Komissar. I wasn't aware of those.

My main idea for recommending the date was that it was 1) the traditional start of the Diesel Era was the end of WWI, and 2) it's truly international because the end of WWI is a world wide event and isn't tied to any one nation so no culture would feel slighted.

Great question on what to do, Ansel. I would imagine Dieselpunks could hold parties, movie viewings, and more. Maybe we could contact major media like TCM and local independent movie art theaters. I imagine coordinating with the Dieselpunk groups around the world so events all happen on the same day. We have lot's of creative people so I'm sure many people will have idea. Something nice is that we've got time to make plans.

Oh, I want to give credit where credit is due. While I recommended Nov 12th, it was our newest member Lady Smoke who recommended the creation of an International Dieselpunk Day. She deserves credit for getting the idea started.

I think this would be something fun for Dieselpunks and a great promotion for the genre.

Sounds like a plan to me. Good idea, Larry.

Well, here on Planet Detroit, there is an anime/geek convention called Youmacon, I know an insider who can probably give me and possibly other diesel/steampunkers a panel on IDPD and the movement in general. The good news is that there are many Steampunkers who go there so that could be a big help and make the most of this day. Also, the timing is great because the 'Con takes place on the (drum roll), first week of November!

Perfect, Ansel. Go for it!

I third, or fourth (or eighth or ninth) the idea of November 12 for IDPD.  As already mentioned, it is significant internationally, and also marks the "beginning" of the Dieselpunk Era, whether you're Ottensian, Piecraftian, or something in between.

I'm adding November 12th as IDPD to my calendar right now.
