Looking for authors for dieselpunk short story anthology
Hi there!
My name is Florian and i'm an author and journalist from Austria.
I publish a phantastic magazine tree times a year and some anthologies. You can have a little look at our latest issue here: http://www.earth-rocks.at/portal/index.php?content=3
For one of our next short story anthologies we want to do something on Dieselpunk.
The problem is, that there are not many authors in Europe who want to deal
with this term. Don't ask me why. Maybe WW II or maybe it is too complicated. I don't know.
On the other side, everyone wants to read about it.
So here is my offer. Maybe there are some authors here, who want to write a dieselpunk short story.
We take those storys, translate it into german, print and publish it.
As we are a non-profit organisation we can't pay you, but you'll receive a free exemplar.
If it is accepted by the readers, we would love to translate the german stories into english and publish it too.
If you are interested in this idea, don't hesitate to ask. It would be a great "intercontinental" project. ;)

Hey there Florian,
I live in Europe, and i'm currently writting a dieselpunk novel (2 chapters done), and i'm interested in the idea. When you say 'short story', how short are we talking about? Let me know some more specifics and perhaps even some ideas you might want me to center around.

I guess this plays a big role. I'm from germany (also erstmal ein Hallo ins Nachbarland) and a big fan of all dieselpunkish weird war stuff. I often encountered people and friends who were nearly shocked that I love stories about e.g. "mad nazis trying to gain world domination by occult means and creatures fro hell". They automatically say "How can you enjoy fictional stories like those when reality was horrible enough"... They can't imagine that one can know (and everybody learns this in many subjects in scholl in germany!) all of the horrors and genocide but can block this for the period of reading a weird war comic, storie, movie... In their eyes it's just a no-go.
I'm currently writing my first novel and I partly fear that I won't find a german publisher due to this overall view... (but I don't care and write it anyway - haha!)
What kind of deadline is there for this anthology? As I said I'm writing my first novel but I like the idea of introducing some of the characters in a short story. Still, Idon't knowi if I find enough time....

First of all, thanks for the quick respond.
@Hayen:
We are talking about 20 pages up. One of the biggest problems i always hear of, is that authors have too little space for their ideas and their stories. So i said to myself: "Why not take not so many authors, but those get more pages?"
There will be only 6 to 7 writers. So i don't have a problem if you write a story with for example 45 pages. Works for me.
The other thing is time. Most of the recent anthos are fast-fixed-piles-of-literature-junk, as i call it.
You will have at least three months for your work.
Then i will proofread it and give you some time to correct it. This we will repeat until everyone is happy with it. :)

You're right. I also ask myself: "Everyone tells us, how bad those nazi scientists were, but if you produce fictional storys about such a danger, it is not ok. A little schizophrenic, isn't it?" Especially, if storys should have a message, this genre would be more than perfect for it. I don't have a real deadline, but if we can manage it to finish the main works on the storys until June, i can publish it around August, maybe September.
My ideas for the anho:
Think of movies like "Tucker", "The Godfather", "Goodfellas". Think of the cities Chicago and Detroit, Mafia wars, corrupt police and law system, but also cool guys and beautiful chicks, who try to get rich before 30 and die by executing this whish. (all in all a nice parallel to nowadays.)
And then mix it up with some mad scientists. There weren't only Nazis, also Russians, Chinese, Japanese and so on.
Mafia against mad villlains. Yeah, i think that could be a great main topic.

Hmm, June sounds like it could be possible for me. And I really like the idea of some kind of introduction/background story for a character of my planned novel. And I already have the background in my head due to the "brain work" before starting to write, I only didn't want to include every detail in the book, so I think it's a good way...
As I said, I can't promise anything but I definetely try!

45 pages is only a maximum. Of course it could be less. I made good experiences with my authors, if they did a little outline for the story. So if it is ok, send me your outline or plot idea and we talk about it, so that we don't get mixed up.
What is really necessary for me is, that the story is about a character. The protagonist should come to a conclusion, we should get an insight, he should learn something for him/herself or for the community/society.
I'll give you an example by mail.

@Hayen. Did you submit a story? I did but apart from an email saying "Thanks, got it. I will keep you informed" I haven't heard anything since months from Florian. Dis you recieve any news or whatever?

Hey, new on the site. Anybody still working on this? If this is a legitimate, ongoing project, I'd be down to whip something up, maybe a quick adventure from the Lucky Ford universe. Anybody heard anything?

Hi Folks!
Yes, i know, it's been a while. But good Anthos aren't buildt in trhee days. It is very difficult to get enough stories from usable quality. Especially the german ones. But i can tell you, that you will here from me in November 2010.
