Dieselpunks

Dieselpunk + Steampunk Culture

Hi everyone,

Good news! After eight years, I've finally saved enough money to finish my basement. No more wood studs hanging out, no more crappy wiring, and no more asbestos tiles cracking underfoot.

The bad news is, I only have enough money for supplies.

This means that I'll be slowing down on content production for the next month or two as I monkey my way through this project. Wish me luck.

If anyone here wants to start any new series, or was looking for an opportunity to write an article or two, now is the time.

Our typical schedule looks like this:

  • Sunday Streamline - A look at diesel-era trains by Lord K
  • Miskatonic Mondays - Articles related to HP Lovecraft or "weird" fiction
  • Two Fisted Tuesdays - Articles related to noir and old-time crime radio
  • Weird War Wednesdays - Articles related to the weird weapons and tactics of WWII, or fantastical stories based around WWII history.
  • (Thursday) Knights of the Air - Articles related to WWI-era pilots and the heavier-than-air machines they dared to tame.
  • (Friday) Lord K's Garage - Classic cars and machines of the diesel era
  • (Friday) Interview - Interviews with icons of the dieselpunk or steampunk cultures
  • (Saturday) Serial Killers - Showcasing serial adventures from the early days of Hollywood
  • Saturday Matinee - Showcasing movies from the early days of Hollywood

Here are some things we don't normally cover, but are still very popular:

  • Dieselpunk/Steampunk music reviews
  • Original works of fiction
  • Original works of scholarly research
  • "How to" articles (art, fashion, gadget building, etc.)

If you can contribute to any of these, or have your own idea for a article or two, please post it here so we can all brainstorm. My goal with Dieselpunks is to update the site at least once a day. Whether that update is an article, a news story, or just a piece of art that I thought everyone would like, it doesn't matter. Keeping the site updated on a regular basis guarantees that people will keep coming back at least once a day to stay on top of what's happening in our community.

I suppose I could try to write some articles about the Netherlands in the Diesel era, after all, it's where I live and history is one of my main interests. Perhaps the bombing of Rotterdam in 1940?
Sounds interesting.  I have no knowledge of that area during the war, so it would be very educational.

Tome,

I can't contribute regularly. However, I am writing a serialized, online, graphic novel set in a very teched-up, Dieselpunk San Francisco. I'd love to do an article about its genesis for your site.

As the story is on hiatus while I deal with some cancer related issues (mumble, grumble, cancer sucks) we are planning on relaunching the week of Santa Clara Steampunk Exhibition - March 25th.

I could certainly have something written up and ready to go for you by then.

Let me know if you're interested.

Cheers,

Daniel

Hmmm... I'm a minor Lovecraft/Mythos scholar. I could do a piece for Miskatonic Monday.

Has the HP Lovecraft Literary Podcast been featured here already?

I don't believe I've talked about the Literary Podcast yet.  Sounds like a good idea!

Even if it's just a one-shot article, that should be good.

I'd love to hear about the idea and where it came from, plus it'll be good promotion for the relaunch in March.

*has urge to write Dieselpunk ficiton again*
I might send some music/event reviews your way.
I'll keep up with the Wednesday Weapons segment, per usual. I might be able to pitch in with some extra non-fiction articles. Might even unleash some dieselpunk fiction rattling around a cobwebbed corner of my PC.
OK, will do a piece. But not for the coming Monday but the one after that (February 1st). I'm too packed this week to do much over the weekend.

Hi Adam,

That would be great!  I know you're always on the town, so you could do show reviews too.

Sometimes a band will sound completely different in person, or they'll have a part of their performance that doesn't relate to their music.

Next week is fine, Mr. Rauchfuss.

I'm going to be slowing down for the next two months, so anything you can do to help during that time would be appreciated.
