During WWII a bomber was shot down,a bombardier Kenneth Daniel Williams of the 351st Bomb Group was to become quite famous in Nazi Germany.
Only because he was wearing a leather flight jacket with the words "Murder Inc" on the back which was the same name as the nose art on the bomber.
The germans made much of this,as they had a idea that the american air force was using mobsters.

The artwork on the jacket has been used on a Zippo Lighter, and on a few fan based designs for a Nose Art Jacket.

I find that the whole story has a great connection, with many aspects of things which i like such as Nose Art,WWII, Fashion,Zippos, and a great story.

Permalink Reply by Elvisrocks59 on December 29, 2011 at 7:07am Well yes indeed Larry, but the germans did start to think that the (unknown) american forces, was made up of murdering gangsters, gun slinging cowboys, and cut throat prisoners from insane asylums.

Ah, the under-appreciated art of American irony! Of course the fact that the gov't reportedly actually DID team up with NYC gangsters (e.g. Luciano) against Mussolini probably didn't help dispel this view!
Interesting find, thanks, Elvisrocks, and welcome!

They would have brought knowledge that I suspect the government lacked. They had as much to lose as the anyone by an Axis victory. As the saying goes, "The enemy of my enemy is my friend."
Permalink Reply by Lawren H.B. on December 30, 2011 at 1:32am I think the government used the Italian mafia to help with the invasion of Italy. (i could be completely wrong though - I heard it on the History Channel)

You're right, Lawren. Specifically we used Charles "Lucky" Luciano and his Sicilian contacts during the invasion of Sicily. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucky_Luciano#World_War_II.2C_freedom_...
Permalink Reply by david bradley on December 30, 2011 at 2:33pm I believe mobsters such as Charlie Luchiano were involved with the USA military intelligence to organise mafia groups as resistance to fascist Italy and Sicily. This could have enhanced the idea.

Permalink Reply by david bradley on December 31, 2011 at 9:15am on a side note to that : Sir Oswald Mosley actually despised Hitler(unlike his wife),objected to the use of "Black and Tans" against the Irish, and did not hate other races (his fascism being based on old imperial ideas)
Permalink Reply by Larry on December 31, 2011 at 9:41am I will first admit that I'm not an authority by any means on Mosley. However, my understanding of the man and his views differ. This site I think documents well Mosley and fits my understanding of him:

Permalink Reply by david bradley on December 31, 2011 at 11:15am my comments were in reply to a post about pre-war criminal Eddie Chapman and reflect the pre-war attitude of Mosley.after the war ,and his internment, his views got harder and the loss of empire destroyed his base.later immigration issues saw him becoming a national front icon, however his earlier views were not particularly racial but he was undoubtedly anti jewish which was not that unusual at the time.
