Dieselpunks

Dieselpunk + Steampunk Culture

Hi all,

I am so glad I found this website. I like steampunk, and I love the dieselpunk era and style, just didn’t know it was this well-defined until a friend tipped me.

I started to slowly design an online flight game in 2010 and experiment with different gameplay ideas on my free time. In trying to write the backstory, I was looking for something in the 40s-50s. I found a string of events that happened in 1958 that could have caused a global catastrophe. In this game they did, and people were forced to survive in the skies rather than underground while forming different factions.

I understand the date may be considered by some to be beyond dieselpunk though, but as mentioned I wasn’t fully aware of the definition. You could say that the catastrophe which led to what we call Earth v2, froze time and prolonged diesel tech & style for decades to come.

This brings me to the art style. In trying to settle on the game’s art style, different artists had different ideas and styles. I did have a rule though: no futuristic/sci-fi aircraft, no jet fighters, and to not be a WWII-only themed game as most are.

We concluded to have unique-custom planes with diesel engines and steam engines, with some rare jet addons, with each type having their advantages and disadvantages. We’re including functionality from experimental planes from the first 50-60 years of the century that may or may not have gone to production, as well as some fictional functionality and weapons because after all, this is a game.

I’d like to show some of the early rough concepts and see what you think. The following drawings that we’ll make will be much more focused and detailed.

Hi Kirill! Thanks for your interest. Send me a message with your email address so we can talk.

It would be nice to hear what people thought about this so far, good or bad!

Hi Nick! Excellent work so far! Design wise, may I suggest you take a look (if you haven't already) at experimental air craftsof WWII era, Nazi Germany especially had some rather interesting designs they were considering, that just screams dieselpunk. I'm not saying you copy it, just draw inspiration from it. I'm talking propellers on the tail of the plane rather then on the nose (as usual), VTOL aircrafts, disc shaped wings (that one was US design actually) etc.

There's a great documentary by BBC that you can find on Youtube, Secret allied/nazi/japanese/soviet aircrafts, some great ideas and designs there that might be further explored in the game.

Hi Romeo, I’m glad you like it and thanks for you awesome suggestions! We are using some pusher propellers actually but hadn't looked at some of the other ones you're mentioning.

If there is a part that someone doesn't like, or likes something specifically, I’d like to hear that too. It’s time to settle on the art style and any feedback is good.

Welcome aboard, Nick!  Love the designs.  You've come to the right place.

Thank you! It's good to be here.

What did you have in mind for characters' design? Uniform style, haircuts, weapons, sidearms...?

Thanks for bringing this up. There will initially be 3 factions in which the players will need to join one. An ex-military group the Militants, the Progressives a somewhat neutral faction, and the Raides which are like pirates.

Unless something drastically changes in the future with regards to game design, most of the characters will be shown while piloting their planes. However they will have handguns, and some rather uncommon close range weapons. This means the player will have some control on them.

Regarding the art style, it's not entirely fixed yet. As you see above, those guys have a cartoony look, however it seems like they could fit in. On the other hand, I have another drawing of a militant shown below with a completely different direction which may not fit in as it was created a while ago. I'd like to hear thoughts, opinions...

Again, I can only offer my suggestions and preferences...

(btw, I like some elements of the outfit shown, especially the high collar with fur lining and straps....mainly because it's similar to my leather flying jacket. (I'm a bodybuilder you see, so the only dieselpunk outfit I can pull off is Doc Savage inspired style  ;)  )

But, I digress...

Now, for the Militants (and again, this might be completely off the point, I'm going solely on the vibe that the name gives me) ; I'm thinking Prisoner of Zenda - foux imperial Germany and/or Tzarian Russia uniforms (double-breasted jackets, shiny brass buttons, monocles, knee-high riding boots, officer sabers etc)

Let me know what you think...

The right-hand character design is close, perhaps a little too close, to Jet Black in Cowboy Bebop. It's the combination of the baldness, the beard, the metallic eye prosthetic, and the overall grumpy demeanor; eliminate one or two of these and the one character probably wouldn't bring the other to mind.

Thanks. I don't think this was intentional by the artist but I'll make a note to do some changes during modelling.

Romeo thanks for your input. Correct me if I'm wrong but your recommendations match more the top two characters rather than the black & white dude. Wondering if I should keep the cartoonish look though..
