Lydia Somerson was born with a silver spoon in her mouth.  Her father is a rich industrialist who not only survived the Depression, he positively thrived, making their family wealth that much more.  Her mother is minor British nobility and a jetsetting social butterfly, rubbing elbows with the rich and famous.  But being so rich and fabulous leaves little time for child-rearing, so Lydia was raised mostly by the household staff of their estate on a private island in the Outer Banks.

Through a strange set of circumstances, most of the staff on the estate are related to one another, a large, extended family of circus performers who escaped Russia two jumps ahead of the Bolsheviks.  Babushka Kolemnikov, the family matriarch and housekeeper (she was the one who hired the rest of the family) took poor, lonesome, excruciatingly shy Lydia under her wing, and started teaching her about the family business.  Under the tutelage of Babushka, she learned arialism, climbing, trapeze, tightrope walking, and climbing.  Under Uncle Dimitri (Babushka's brother), Lydia learned juggling, knife throwing and how to use the bullwhip and pistols.  Under the footmen she learned eastern and western combat.

He covers his face with his cape, eyes shifting left to right. "Dark deeds are behind the vatican. Dark deeds, indeed."

His cape flutters outward, and he's holding a strange circular stone in his hand. Turning wheels overlapped each other on the face of it, with arcane symbols lines up all around them.

"Behold! The Gnosis Cipher! Cower at the sheer power it contains!"

You look down at it, and it doesn't do anything. "What power does it contain... exactly?"

He tucks it back into his pocket, holding a finger up at you. "It contains the power of infinate knowledge! With this, I can find, or even create, any magical artifact within our realm."

What do you say:
1)ask why he's in america
2)ask about the devil's circus
3)get his card to see him another time(end conversation)

"Oh, how amazing!" I say.  "They say magic comes from the devil.  Which makes me wonder.... I saw an announcement in the paper this morning about something called The Devil's Circus.  Have you heard of it?"

"You! You mean YOU saw the devil's circus and live to tell the tale?!"

"In the paper, yes."

He leans back farther than a normal human could, holdind onto his top hat so it doesn't fall right off. "Can it be?! Then you must be... someone who knows about circus attractions!"

You raise an eyebrow at him. "Excuse me?"

"Why, this is wondifferous," he continued. "You can help me find the mysteries behind the circus and obtain magical riches beyond our wildous dreams, made of man's wildous dreams!"

"I can?"

"Yes! But not now, later." He hands you a card with a picture of him on the cover, making a tiger float through a hoop. All of his info is on the back. "Here! Have my card and CALL ME in the near furture. I came to america for this very reason and here you are, practically falling in my lap: someone who knows about the cirus and speaks english! Without the language barrier, nothing shall stop me from obtaining the riches from the devil's circus!"

He turns to Sally. "I must be off, dear one. Once I'm settled into this american wilderness, be certain I will pay you in kind."

Covering his body with his cape, he takes in a deep breath. "Farewell, circus child. I am off to prepare for the adventure of a human lifetime. Toodles."

In a puff of smoke, he is gone, the main door opening and closing loudly behind you and Sally. She gives you an awkward look. "He... didn't act like that in Rome... all of the time."

What do you do now?
1)contiue talking to Sally(about the charity ball itself)
2)Find someone else to talk to
3)take a break and relax somewhere

I laugh easily as I link arms with Sally again and lead her away.  "Show business people.  They're all bonkers," I say, and laugh again.  "Now, you simply must tell me everything!  What brings you to a charity ball?  I thought you'd be in Paris, living the life of dissipation most likely to make your father's head explode, making your living as an artist's model and taking some penniless writer as a lover."

"Why, dear. Don't you know who's hosting this party?"

1) Yes (roll a 20 for charm)

2) No (same result, but no chance of exp bonus)

Roll is a ... sigh.  Roll is a 6.  How embarrassing.

I make a vague, dismissive gesture.  "Oh, who pays attention to that sort of thing," I say lightly. "Why, is it someone important?"

(Sorry for the wait, I forgot to send the response)

"Important?! It's Antlanta's very own-"

Dual trumpets sounded at the foot of the stairs, one of the trumpeters announcing the owner of the house. "Now presenting... Lord Jebediah E. Lee!"

You question his title quietly to yourself. "Lord? Someone thinks too high and mighty of themselves."

In an expensive pure white suit, Jebediah walks down the stairs; everyone clapping in appreciation. He is surprisingly young in appearence, but mature in stature. You would even find him handsome if there wasn't such a snooty attitude from his expression.

"Speak of the devil, Sally tells you. "I'm going to stand in line to meet him. Do you want to come with?"

What do you do?
1)try to meet Lord Jebediah E. Lee
2)talk to someone else
3)go off on your own

"How intriguing!" I say. "Lead the way, Sally! I simply must meet this fellow." And I follow her as she gets into the receiving line.

The line seems to go for miles with women of all kinds and apperently all parts of the world waiting to try and seduce him. Money makes wives, as they say(nobody says that).
You won't be able to meet him at this rate. Roll d20 to try and charm him.

Oooh! I rolled a 16!  I don't do much:  I watch until I catch him glancing my direction; then I give him a smile.

A bright pink aurora surrounds you, making you the only thing in his sight. After quickly discontinuing the discussion he was having with an admirer, he starts walking towards you.

"Oh my god," sally squeals, "he's heading this way! What should I say? Should I cursty? Should I bow? Oh, everything's happening so fast!"

Jebediah is right in front of you and even more handsome up close. Your knees are starting to buckle without you even thinking. Luckily, your agility is high enough to keep you steady(no check needed).

I'll let you take the torch with the conversation until you need info. I beleive you know what types of questions to ask by now :)

(sorry for the delay in answering.  Been pretty sick this week)

I turn up the wattage on my smile as "Lord" Lee approaches Sally and me.  He is so easy to look at,almost mesmerizing.  What charisma!  He stops in front of me and takes my outstretched hand in his own, bowing over it to brush his lips against the knuckles.

"My word!" I say breathlessly.  "Lord Lee himself!"

"I think I might swoon!" Sally said, as he bent over her hand as well.  "What do you think, Lydia?"

"You got to do the swooning last time," I said, a mischievous grin creeping over my features;sometimes I just can't help myself.  "It's my turn to do the swooning.  You should burst into tears of joy."

"But crying makes my nose swell up," said Sally.  "I'll just get the vapors, how does that sound?"

"What exactly are the vapors?" I said.  "I never have gotten a satisfactory answer on that one.  Mr. Lee -- I beg your pardon, Lord Lee -- do you know what the vapors are?"

Lord Lee look at Sally, then me, and smiled.  "I fear I have no idea," he said.  My word, his voice was as handsome as his face; nothing made my heart flutter like a mellifluous baritone.  "But I do have an idea that certain young ladies have not even troubled to be introduced before they are already tugging on my leg.  How impolite is that?"

Sally giggled.  I laughed.  I never giggle; it's beneath my dignity.  Honestly, it's the truth, ask anyone.  "My word! How very rude of those ladies," I said, pressing a hand to my heart.  "We'd better remedy that situation. May I have the honor of introducing my friend, Sally Armstrong."

"And this is my friend Lydia Somerson," said Sally.

"The honor is entirely mine," said Lee, bowing his head.  "Alas, I have nobody to introduce me."

"Sally, I have it on the best authority that this gentleman is Lord Jebediah E. Lee, gentleman, scholar, and host of this lovely party we have stumbled across," I said.  "At least I think he is the Lord Lee who is a gentleman and a scholar.  I certainly hope he's not the internationally known scoundrel, also known as Lord Lee."   I turn to Lee.  "Which one are you? The gentleman or the scoundrel?"

Sally rolled her eyes at me.  "Don't mind her, Mr. Lee.  Lydia thinks she's funny.  Sometimes she's even right."

Lord Lee looked at me, then at Sally, then back to me.  Then he smiled.  "How did I manage to miss meeting the two of you before now?  I can't believe I could have overlooked two such charming ladies."

I tutted at him.  "Think nothing of it, sir.  We have worked hard to hide our lights under a bushel; it doesn't do to be too clever, not in this town."  He offered me an arm, and I took it easily.  His other arm he offered to Sally, which she accepted. "Now," I continued, as he started to lead us away.  "Where have you been, that you missed your chance to meet clever Atlanta debutantes?  I thought that was the driving force behind all of male society!  Meeting Atlanta debs, I mean."
