Dieselpunks

Dieselpunk + Steampunk Culture

As (listening to, not playing myself) music plays a big part in my life I wondered what music you people listen to?

Here's a short (?) overview of my musical taste:

Though being rooted in metal since my childhood (at the age of eleven, now I'm 32) and was a quite intolerant metalhead till about 18/19, I nowadays would never want to miss the other genres I then opened my ears to.

Metal (with pagan/black and epic metal being my faves) was and will always be special to me but there are many other styles of music I absolutely enjoy and love:

- martial industrial like Triarii, LJDLP, L'Effet C'est Moi…

- neofolk like Of The Wand And the Moon, Solblot, Changes

- synth music like Tangerine Dream (loved such music since first hearing TD's "Street Hawk" theme as a kid), Klaus Schulze, Telomere, Area51

- Marillion's stuff with Fish as a singer (Script…, Fugazi, Misplaced Childhood, Clutching…)

- Bruce Springsteen's earlier albums (pre-Born In The USA so to say…)

- IDM/electronic stuff like Anhedonia, Autechre, Future Sound Of London

- streetrock/punk like The Bones, Dropkick Murphys, Discipline, The Boys...

- 80s stuff which I already loved as a kid when lisitening to the radio (New Order, Ultravox etc.)

- industrial and "cyber-like" music like NIN, Left Spine Down, Frontline Assembly, Ministry

- movie scores like Conan, Kull, Back To The Future, Superman, Indy… (I love leitmotifs and catchy themes)

- music from videogames, esp. those from ym childhood days

- shoegaze in the vein of Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine

- The Birthday Massacre (though I'm normally bored by goth stuff, but this band has something special ... don't know what exactly, some kind of 80s synthie sugar sweet and Disney-evil atmosphere. I just love their music)

I also occascionally write reviews (in german and english) for an online metal & dark music magazine. my reviews are all linked here i my blog (if you like to read them ;) )

So, what about you people? Which kind of music do you like?

I like:

- Steampunk sub-genre music (Clockwork dolls, clockwork quartet, vernian process)

- Dieselpunk sub-genre music (mather louth and radio noir, diablo swing orchestra)

- Insanely weird electronic music (aphex twin, autechre)

- Alternative music (radiohead, blur, tom waits, youngblood brass band, thom yorke, faithless, boozoo bajou, boards of canada)

- Post-rock (sigur rós)

and all kind of oldies, like the ones appearing on this website's jukebox.
Blues (especially Chicago blues)

Classic 40's Swing

Lounge (Frank Sinatra/Dean Martin/Bobby Darin/Michael Buble/Robbie Williams/Harry Connick Jr./et. al.)

Swingpunk/Swing revival

80's music

Soundtracks

Steampunk

The Poxy Boggards (which I guess is Irish Folk-slash-ren faire music)

Disco (shhhh!)
@Hayen: sigur rós and autechre - great stuff! :-)
I've seen a pattern in my music tastes changing based on the season.

Spring - Swing and neo-Swing (Royal Crown Revue is my favorite), Big Band (what you hear on the homepage jukebox)

Summer - Rock (Linkin Park, Perfect Circle, Marilyn Manson, System of a Down), Classic Rock (Blue Oyster Cult, The Doors, Bad Company, CCR) and Punk (Strike Anywhere, Blitzkid, Dead Kennedys, Sex Pistols, Bad Religion, Ramones, Decedents, Dropkick Murphys, Pennywise, Flogging Molly, Anti-Flag, Rancid, Lars Frederiksen & The Bastards)

Autumn - Electronic Rock (VNV Nation, Covenant, Depeche Mode), and Horror rock (Zombina and the Skeletones, Misfits, Calabrese, Blitzkid)

Winter - Really hard metal (Cradle of Filth, Children of Bodom), and Industrial (NIN, KMFDM, MDFMK)

When I need some quiet time, anytime of the year, I listen to diesel-era Jazz/Big Band, Trip Hop (Portishead, Massive Attack, Beauty's Confusion, DJ Shadow, Tricky), Shoegazer (Mira, Love Spirals Downwards), and Classical/Neo-Classical music (Paganini, Grieg, Handel, Rasputina, Zeo Keating).
My tastes are so varied. Classic rock, Alt rock, AAA, Indie rock, Symphonic Metal, Ragtime, Big Band, Swing, Jazz, Bluegrass, Americana, Classic Country, Classical, Indigenous music and more. The only two types of music I really don't enjoy are rap and what today passes for country (i.e. "Big and Rich" and similar musicians) though once in a while even a few of those.
which bands of symphonic metal do you listen to, Larry?
I was an intolerant metalhead myself up until I was 16. Then, I sort of had a revelation that most lyrics are bullocks anyways. When I figured that most of the lyrics were about being evil or demonic or were about heartache or on the occasion politics, I explored a bit more. Before, right around 8th grade, I had just gotten over a rap fad just after I realized that all rap songs were about sex and drugs, it just seemed like the content was too shallow for me. When I discovered that rock existed, I just stopped caring that I was the only kid who liked rock in LA. I lived in a mexican suburb, all I heard was rap and mexican music, so when I started playing My Chemical Romance, I got alot of hate for it. I'm 18, I still listen to them, I don't care anymore. I feel that "drink my beer and smoke my weed but my good friends is all I need" has less musical value and depth than "they're gonna rip off your heads, your aspirations to shreads, another cog in the murder machine." Another point I feel that I have to make, it drives me crazy when music is rejected because it's mainstream. My Chem is just shunned now for being so mainstream, but their musical content is highly overlooked because of it. Another thing I feel like pointing out is that it drives me crazy when a band like Panic! at the Disco iscalled "emo" when that same human that labeled them is madly in love with the song "I won't see you tonight" from Avenged Sevenfold. I love mainstream and non mainstream alike and I like every genre just as long as the content has some sort of depth in it. A few minutes ago I was listening to Beirut, but I'm switching over to Gorillaz right now. I'm dying to hear more work from the Clockwork Quartet, I'm wishing they would come to America. Last night I was listening to Queen, My alarm clock woke me up to "In the Mood" by the Glenn Miller band. I took my motorbike Betty out for a ride and I was humming "The Motorcycle song" by Arlo Guthrie. When I'm on the bus, I listen to System of a Down and practice my sign language. when I'm in Ceramics class, I turn on the Beatles and sculpt.

also: RE: the one who likes Poxy Boggards, I met them in a Renaissance Faire. I saw their show, it was simply spectacular. I lol'd all day.
Nightwish, comes to mind. A good friend turned me onto them a few years ago. If you have any recommendations I would love to hear them.

Oh, I forgot to mention I also like Western Swing. My taste is very eclectic.
I love a lot of MCR. Especially Black Parade.

Here's a question for everyone? Is the video to Black Parade steampunk or dieselpunk?

You said you liked the Clockwork Quartet. Have you heard of The Clockwork Dolls? They're pretty good as well. I can't help the feeling that there's some unknown celtic tune lurking around in their songs.
hmm, I'm more into the more harder forms of symphonic metal ("harder" when compared to Nightwish) but you could try Ayreon, Epica and the godfathers of orchestral metal music: Therion

...I'm actually mostly into video game music.
