Comment by John L. Sands on November 4, 2011 at 11:03am If there were only two words to be put on my tombstone, I would like them to be "Musician and Sideman." Besides musical ability a sideman has to blend in with other musicians and occasionally exhibit a burst of virtuosity. Anyone can play lead tenor. It tales a real musician to be part of the glue that holds the band together and be a contributor to the sound.
I have posted an article on Johnny Hodges who, even Duke Ellington admitted, was the sound of his orchestra. Please visit this article and watch the video. 10,000 words could not described this pioneer of swing. He not only played swing, he did swing.
The beginning starts of silky and sentimental with lots of gutsy bending and sliding of notes up to pitch. Very shortly he starts his groove and you can't help but swinging along with him in awe.
