A hand, more meat than malice, rested lightly on Emily’s shoulder.  “Pardon me, mam.  The owner, Mr. Licciardi, has requested your presence in his office upstairs."

He glanced around to survey the rest of the room.

“You might want to bring your shrug.  It’s pretty cold up there.”

Emily opened her mouth to protest, but decided against it. It wasn't a question, anyway, so she just took her shrug and Janie's purse and followed the stranger.

"I, uh...." she started uncertainly. "I'm sorry, but what does Mr. Licciardi want with me?"

"You keep an interesting circle of friends, and Mr. Licciardi just wants to see what all the fuss is about."

The staircase was a lot steeper than Emily would have thought, or maybe it was all in her imagination. Either way, she was about to meet one of the most important men in the entire city of Titan.

Emily stifled a sigh. She wasn't even supposed to be there tonight. She probably didn't know more about Tod and Janie than the man she was about to meet, though she doubted he would take her word for that. She kept quiet for the rest of the way up. That man made her very uncomfortable, and whatever Mr. Licciardi was like, he would make an improvement compared to him. Emily was scared, but to her surprise, not nearly as scared as she thought she ought to be. She was mostly angry now, and the possiblity that Mr. Licciardi might be able to provide her with some answers was enough to relax her, in part , at least.
