This handsome fellow was Lewis Payne, a.k.a. Lewis Powell, sentenced to death. The original views - wet collodion negatives on glass plates - were shot in April 1865, three months before his execution by hanging, wearing that same sweater.

There is no more than just one clock in the picture!
I agree with you about the typography being a little bit superfluous Tome, but the composition needed to be balanced on the left side, while keeping it somehow assymetrical. As a web designer, I'm sure you know how it feels...
