1940's Style Video

Came across this e-how video on 1940's men's fashion insights.  Quite useful, imo, as it identifies some of the nuances that most of today's fellows are likely to overlook.  Unfortunatly, the embedding process is a bit quirky, but the link to the video is here: …See More

Chaplin's Modern Times will be on this weekend, on TCM...

For those who happen to have access to Turner Classic Movies, this Saturday, the 7th, @ 9:45pm, the Charlie Chaplin classic "Modern Times" will be playing.  One of his best known movies, it has excellent cinematography and a unique industrial atmosphere - but aside from the technicalities and analysis, its…See More

The Houndstooth Kid's blog on gentlemen's attire

I've been following a blog titled "The Houndstooth Kid," which follows the gentleman's efforts to develop a classic wardrobe from era attire he has acquired from different locales. Aside from the unique details that men's clothes had at the time which he makes a point of showing (e.g. some pants of the time had "double belt loops" - who would have thought of this kind of minute detail would have existed…See More

A (very brief) graphic primer between Art Deco and Streamline Moderne...

I'll have to hunt down the attribution for these images, but in a bit of a discussion between the Art Deco and Streamline Moderne, I located these images which speak the proverbial one thousand words. Above is the Art Deco architectural details, and below are the Streamline Moderne!See More

An introduction to Seraph City, a Dieselpunk corner of Second Life...

The Empire Jazz Club, my main venue in Seraph CityFor those who may not know of me, please do allow for a brief introduction. I'm Rafael Fabre, and I've been involved with the Second Life (SL) platform for a couple of years. My widest notoriety comes from the Steampunk blog I pen, the Steampunk Tribune, but the genre has been enduring growing pains in the virtual world, akin but different to the "real world" (RL) Steampunk conflicts with the migration of new people who are "discovering" the…See More

Carette's classic music feed....

I was working on a new blog/website (for local coffee shops) and during the fleshing out of the site, I stumbled upon a coffee shop in Paris that was first opened during the Dieselpunk era (1927), with an empahsis on Art Deco styling. That is of course interesting, but perhaps more impressive, is the outstanding musical selection (imo), appropriate to the era. The Carette's page is an excellent site, and worth a quick peek (or as I do, leave the site up and running for the music in the…See More

The Hindenburg Ashtray, from the Antiques Roadshow archives

As I was packing to leave Baltimore yesterday, I turned on the television, and it landed on the Antiques Road Show. I was busy ignoring it, until I heard the mention of "Hindenburg", which quickly caught my attention. Seems that a lady had a family heirloom from her father regarding the Hindenburg. It was an ashtray made of aluminium, with a glass replica of the Hindenburg above it. The glass zeppelin is filled with fuel used to run the engines of the Hindenburg (putting a low level heat source…See More

Man in the High Castle, Phillip K. Dick's Classic Post-WW2 Alternate History novel to be made into a mini-series

Noted on IO9 yesterday, Phillip K. Dick (PKD), the author of some very impressive novels (which have been made into some terrible movies, such as A Scanner Darkly), will have his classic of post World War 2 alternate history, the Man in the High Castle, made into a mini-series. Before the groaning starts (which is quite understandable after "Paycheck"), it will be made by the BBC and directed by Ridley Scott (Aliens, the upcoming Forever War, and the best remake of a PKD movie, Blade Runner).…See More
