Interview with Anders Blixt: Dieselpunk Pioneer

Most people know that Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in 1876. However, most don’t know that many credit Antonio Meucci for also inventing it. The origins of dieselpunk follows a similar pattern. In most dieselpunk literature, Lewis Pollack is credited with coining the term ‘dieselpunk’ to promote the RPG Children of the Sun in 2002. It turns out this is only half the picture. In a posting on the excellent Facebook page …

Let's Get Romantic - It's The February (Valentine) Edition Of Pilsner's Picks!

I've heard a rumor that there's some kind of big football hoo-hah going on somewhere or other today. But never mind that, I've got something better— musical hoo-hah! Yes, it's the February Pilsner's Picks!

With Valentine's Day coming up, I've of course chosen some appropriately romantic numbers for the occasion. If you're not moved to tears by the tender and poignant sentiments expressed so delicately by Bessie Smith, then you must have a heart of stone!…

The Man in the High Castle Amazon Pilot with Opening Titles and Screenshots

The pilot episode for the mini series The Man in the High Castle is now available on amazon.com. I read the book back when I was in college, and to be honest I don’t remember much of it. However speaking for what I saw in the pilot it’s one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen on “TV”.

For those unfamiliar with the story The Man in the High Castle is set in an alternate world of 1962 where the Allied forces lost the second world war, and as a result the…

Ring Out The Old, Ring In The— REALLY Old!

As we endure a nasty cold snap here in California (I feel like I'm living back in the Northeast!), here's some good old-fashioned hot jazz and vaudevillian hokum to warm everyone up a little. Yes, it's the January edition of Pilsner's Picks!

Which can also be taken as a sort of tribute to Shirley Temple, if you want (see final tune). A very Happy New Year to all my fellow Dieselpunks from Pils at "North Pole South., Ca." Brrrr!…

Hi everybody!

The art of David Uhl

David Uhl was born in Toledo, Ohio on September 20, 1961.

Early on David began creating amazing drawings and, by high school's end, had decided to pursue a career in art. He applied for, and won, the only full-ride scholarship to the Colorado Institute of Art offered to a high school senior in the U.S He was dissatisfied with the design programs the school offered, yet he excelled at the life drawing and illustration classes. Leaving school after one year, he focused his…

Miskatonic Monday - Musical Recordings From the Realm of the Dead

Lights out, everybody.

On Miskatonic Mondays we celebrate the "weird" fiction of HP Lovecraft and the genre of otherworldly horror it spawned.

Today's tale of the otherworldly comes from the enigmatic Troy Morgan. In his short film, Musical Recordings From the Realm of the Dead, four separate individuals at the dawn of wireless technology become accidental collaborators in a musical composition that is pieced…

Repeal Day is December 5th! Here's where you can get an old-fashioned drink in LA

December 5 marks an important day in history for those who love to drink alcohol: Repeal Day. Back in 1933, Prohibition ended with the 21st Amendment. But the speakeasy culture didn't end there as many bars in Los Angeles are still keeping up with the theme. This Friday, bars and restaurants throughout the city are offering cocktail and food deals, and some are even throwing soirees celebrating this watershed moment. The deals listed below are all for Friday, unless…

Miskatonic Monday - Roddy Piper vs. Cthulhu!

Lights out, everybody.

On Miskatonic Mondays we celebrate the "weird" fiction of HP Lovecraft and the genre of otherworldly horror it spawned.

Portal To Hell logo

Imagine, if you will, that the Great Old One, Cthulhu himself, had a secret soft spot for Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn in Overboard and convinced the great John Carpenter to return to Lovecraft mode to write him a part in it. We’d like to think the result would be very much…

Ho Ho Ho (Or Bah Humbug, Take Your Choice), It's The December Pilsner's Picks!

A day early rather than a day late (for a change), here's the 2014 Holiday Edition of Pilsner's Picks. I'm still fooling around with the uploads and page formatting, so now I've returned to posting the MP3 files as individual tracks rather than as a playlist. If nothing else, it looks better this way!

Since I don't have a whole lot of Xmas-type music in my collection, some of these tunes have appeared before (but not recently) and others have absolutely nothing to do with the…

Celebrating Dieselpunk Day

On Dieselpunk Day, we set aside the constraints of normalcy to celebrate the dieselpunk community.

Created by greeting card manufacturers in the mid-1970s, Dieselpunk Day was a way to boost their pre-Christmas revenue. As we all know, people across the world needed something to celebrate after the terrible atomic dust storms earlier that year. Halloween had already passed, and Santa Inc. had not yet claimed a stranglehold on the last five months of the calendar.

So, while we…

Pilgrim Pilsner's Pure Puritanical Picks

Hear ye, hear ye, all Pilgrims, turkeys, and soon to be disenfranchised Native Americans— the November Pilsner's Picks have arrived, so give thanks and let the downloading begin!

I'm still struggling with my new web host's embed code formatting, and so two of the song titles seem to have been cut short on the screen for reasons that I can't figure out yet. The full…

Halloween Ghost stories: The Ghost Blimp

Halloween is just around the corner, and I know you Dieselpunks are just dying for a good old fashion tale of mystery and the supernatural. This tale is one of the more well known stories from the World War 2 era, one that is still trying to be debunked. It involves a small voyage in a navy blimp, the L-8, during it's last journey. It was a simple mission, but it ended with an extraordinary conclusion.

The L-8 was, like all US navy blimps, used to detect enemy submarines from…
