behind the music: rpm orchestra's new digital release "roundabout" ep

roundabout is a free 6-song digital EP release by rpm orchestra.

available @ archive.org/details/RoundaboutRpmOrchestra

it includes two cuts from the afterglow CD, two previously unreleased tracks, and a two-song live concert performance.

behind the music details:

tracks 01 & 03 were originally included on the afterglow CD, available from the onewordlong label.

02. cylinder rituals

includes layering of four archival wax cylinder recordings & home-recorded 78rpm surface noise.

04. bondstugan routine

field/home recordings of random actions and live 78rpm record manipulation/playing, then recontextualized with some creative commons sourced material as well.

the knocking at the door, followed by a voice saying "hey, are you sleeping?", that you hear about midway through the song is a friend who dropped by randomly on the afternoon i was recording these actions/sounds. i don't know why he used the present tense either. i think he was just startled because i answered my door and said nothing (because, you know, I was still recording!)

05. 16 january

live at trunk space (phoenix az). the live orchestra typically varies between three and seven performers, depending on the show, with three participants this particular night.

i was joined by jim dustan (guitar) and jocelyn ruiz dustan (clarinet/piano), of World Class Thugs, in this performance.

documentation on the jan 16th show is included in the report:

A Science of Music (Investigation of Memory Theory and Practice in a Performance Context)
