Our tropical tryst continues here at the Cabaret today in the Gibraltar of the East, Singapore! And how better to enter Singapore than by a Singapore, a Short Singapore Flying Boat, of course! A bit of a choppy go compared to an Empire Class, but the orient is for adventure, is it not?
And what a fabulous night it is here in this beautiful, tropical, and not to mention secure island fortress of a city. Sure, ol' Tojo is saber-rattling again, but there's no way they're getting through those big guns the Brits have put up unless they think they're marching an army across hundreds of miles of jungle! Tonight we're at the glamorous Raffles Hotel, where the local boy done well Al Bowley, who got his start right here, will be performing for an adoring crowd. This master crooner has spellbound audiences the world over with his hits "Midnight, the Stars and You", "Goodnight, Sweetheart", "The Very Thought of You", "Guilty", and "Love Is the Sweetest Thing", but it is his "Melancholy Baby" that's setting us swooning tonight!
Smooth as silk, isn't he, folks? Well, tonight's libation is too. Another local work of art, the Singapore Sling was first developed right here in the Raffles Hotel by local mixologist Ngiam Tong Boon:
Pour gin, lemon juice, simple syrup, and sugar into a shaker, shake well over ice and strain into a highball glass with ice cubes. Add club soda and float cherry brandy on the top by pouring over the back of a bar spoon. Add a lemon slice and a maraschino cherry for garnish.
And with that, folks, we bit you adieu. Enjoy the sights of Singapore and have a good flight out!
