Catch the Buzz: it's all about the Baltimore!

Yes, the Cabaret is on its way up the East Coast of America, celebrating the new Dance Crazes that are sweeping the nation, and today we're in beautiful Baltimore, Maryland, where everyone is obviously wild about that new dance from Eubie Blake's famous Broadway show Shuffle Along, the Baltimore Buzz!  [image from kilduffs.com]

Also called simply The Baltimore, this shuffling step is easy enough for anyone to do, and for you New Yorkers eager to learn this step, check out our friend Buddy Bradley and he'll set you up right!

While not quite the Charleston in terms of sweeping all before it, the Baltimore Buzz is still one hell of a nice way to kick out your heels.  Jump up and do it with us, folks.  Let our friends from London Fred Rich and his Astor Hotel Orchestra tell you how it's done:

 Ain't it swell, folks?

And speaking of Buzz, let us most definately not swing by a little hole in the wall for a Biltmore buzz:

Biltmore Cocktail:

  • 1 piece of (ideally fresh) Pineapple
  • 2 oz Gin
  • 1 oz Sweet Vermouth
  • 1 Hazelnut, soaked 2-24 hours in Maraschino liquer
  • Dash of Maraschino Liquer

Presoak hazelnut for several hours (ideally at least 24) in maraschino liquer.  Muddle pineapple in a mixing glass.  Add gin, vermouth, and maraschino.  Stir well and strain into a cocktail glass.  Strain hazelnut from maraschino bath and add to drink as flavoring/garnish.  (in a pinch or in case of nut allergies, substitute a dash of Frangellico or other hazelnut liquer for the presoaked hazelnut).

Thanks, Tome!  It's worth mentioning that Baltimore then was a fair bit nicer than it is today.  Just compare that skyline from 1920 with today's: it's about the only city I can think of in the US to shrink its skyline in the past century.  A real shame.

As much as I hate Baltimore with a passion deeper than murder, this is still a good article.
