Yes, folks, it's the new sound sensation that's taking the world by storm, Dave Brubeck* and his fabulous Quartet!
We're here live on the campus of UC Berkeley in San Francisco, California, for a special performance. Dave and his band erupted on to the stage just recently with a whole new sound defined by non-traditional meters like 5/4, 7/4, and 9/8, bringing a hip new beat to the jazz world.
And boy has that beat captured the heart of the world, particularly among the youth where his college performances are so in demand that students are practically rioting when university presidents refuse to allow this scandalously racially-integrated band to perform! The youth message seems clear: the soul of music trumps the dogma of Jim Crow any time!
Dave says he travelled the world for inspiration, bringing back Turkish 9/8 meters for his "Rondo ala Turk", for example. But his biggest hit, that's quickly becoming a jazz standard even now, is the incomparable title track to his best-selling album "Take Five" with its 5/4 time and hypnotic syncopation. And that is what he will be performing for our listening audience at home right now.
A 'Frisco native himself, Dave's getting the home town welcome. They've clogged the concert hall and are climbing the windows here at Berkley to catch a glimpse of a legend in the making. And I can't say I blame them. Others are hanging out in their dorm rooms listening to Berkley's student radio station, which is teaming up with the Cap'n Tony Radio Network(R) to bring this performance to the world. Who can even guess what those crazy cats are up to in the dorms?
Oh the wild college life!
So, without further ado, the Dave Brubeck Quartet, live on the Atomic Cabaret!!
Smooth as silk! A smooth and trendy new song like that deserves a smooth and trendy new libation, such as tonight's cocktail featuring the hot new Russian spirit of Vodka, the Moscow Mule! The Cold War may make it hard to see eye-to-eye with the Reds, but certainly this no-nonsense neutral spirit is a taste West and East can agree upon!
Moscow Mule Cocktail:
Fill a copper mug with ice. Pour Vodka and Lime Juice over the ice. Top off with Ginger Ale. Garnish with a lime wedge.
* Author's Note: I had originally intended this piece for next week, but given that Mr. Brubeck passed away on the 5th of December earlier this week it seemed just and right to honor him now. His 92nd birthday would have been the next day. He and his band were true innovators and trendsetters and changed music in more than one way. RIP, Mr. Brubeck!
