Knights of the Air - Belgium's WWI air force

Four members of Belgium's air force, 37 pilots strong when the War began, rest beside their French-designed Farman HF20 biplace in October 1914.

Though pushed to the sea by Germany's opening onslaught, the Belgians fought on. Fernand Jacquet, second from left, scored his nation's first air victory in April 1915.

To Cap'n Tony:
it's even more complicated. After Napoleonic Wars the French never claimed an inch of the Low Lands. France (as well as Prussia) guaranteed the territorial integrity of neutral Belgium. Kaiser Wilhelm II tried to make Belgium his ally, promising to King Leopold new territorial acquisitions on the account of France. In August 1914 Leopold's heir, King Albert, refused to grant the German Army a free passage. So the Germans, seeking the short way to Paris, entered Belgium without Albert's consent. That's how the war has started for the little kingdom. These guys literally fought for their land.

Have to be, I'd assume. Stuck between two huge nations that have both claimed your turf and all.
