Release Date: December 18, 2013
Genre: Action, Thriller
Director: George Clooney
Writer: George Clooney, Grant Heslov

Plot: Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, "The Monuments Men" is an action-thriller focusing on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners. It would be an impossible mission: with the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell, how could these guys -- seven museum directors, curators, and art historians, all more familiar with Michelangelo than the M-1 -- possibly hope to succeed? But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind's greatest achievements.

I want to see this movie so much. I love war movies and most other movies that have to do with war. Not only that; this looks absolutely FASCINATING.

I just finished reading a very interesting book about the true post-war hunt for the Crown Jewels of the Holy Roman Empire by Sidney Kirkpatrick = Hitler's Holy Relics . Though the film The Monuments Men might be fiction based on fact in the usual form of Holly-Weird re-edited for dramatics history, I still think it could be a good story. Will have to wait and see.

No matter. Ya gotta admit that the work of the REAL Monuments Men did liberate and recover hordes of national treasures. For the first time in history victorious nations actually worked to return art treasures to their rightful owners (even those of the nation that they defeated) rather than keep them for themselves. This, and other actions, I think says a heck of a lot about our fathers! . . . Yeah, they REALLY were HEROES!!!

...but before we all laugh too loud, it seems also appropriate to remember the approx. 25,000 dead caused by the Dresden bombing 13th/14th February 1945 by allied forces. The firestorm burnt the old city center and its irrecoverable baroque monuments and art collections (which were by the way not robbed by the Nazis, but natural historic cultural possessions of Saxony) to the ground, while military targets are stilled questioned by historians ever existed in close proximity to the hits.

the main thing is, that the suits fit ;) 70 years after the war who can tell if those plots are based on true stories or not, but it looks fun.
