Mushing my sled through the ten-foot snowdrifts of a California blizzard with nothing to feed my dogs but fresh oranges (picked right off the trees), I still came through on time with another "stack o'sides!" Yes, fans, "Neither snow, nor rain, nor gloom of night, etc., etc., etc..." Anyway, if you happen to be freezing your tuchis off, I've heard that doing the Charleston is a great way to warm up— so I'm happy to provide some appropriate music as a public service (me and Paul Whiteman,…Continue

Happy New Year, Dieselpunkers, and here's a little New Year's present from the world's oldest and creakiest New Year's Baby— me.
Yes, it's the January 2014 Pilsner's Picks, and it's getting harder and harder nowadays to find those steel needles for the old Orthophonic Victrola. In any case, here's a little hot music to warm up the house on these cold winter days.…

For the half-dozen or so people who are wondering what happened to Pilsner's Picks, yours truly was wandering around Seattle snapping pictures and doing the whole tourist bit when I'm usually putting the playlist together. So for the first time in about twelve years (!!!) the Picks are late. However, here they are, without further ado (I ran completely out of ado during the trip).…

I'm very pleased to report that the U.S. Government shutdown has NOT affected Pilsner's Picks (since we accept no government funds, never having been offered any— what's wrong with them, anyway?).
So, here's the October edition, right on schedule!

Since it's Labor Day weekend, I've labored long and hard to produce this month's Picks playlist [Pilsner mops his steaming brow, collapses in a heap].
Well, no, not really— it only takes me about an hour or so at the keyboard, sipping a nice cool drink. But that sure sounds good, now doesn't it?

Well, here it is August already, as another year goes racing by. So, as I broil and bake under the searing California summer sun, I'll do the logical thing— turn on the heat.
With the August Pilsner's Picks, that is. So, take it away, Jack Hylton's Rhythmagicians!

Well, maybe not that patriotic, except for the 1922 Okeh Records label with the Statue of Liberty on it. I posted just about all the flag-waving music I've got last July (including a rare electrical recording of John Philip Sousa's band), so now it's back to my usual grab bag of mostly 20's stuff, with a few risky excursions (copyright-wise) into the 30's and 40's.…

Ever since this new "Great Gatsby" flick came out, I've been getting requests to add a few hip-hop numbers to Pilsner's Picks. I hate to disappoint anyone, but even though I think that that director's idea is absolutely brilliant (?!!), I'm sticking to my long-time format of nothing but authentic 1920's and 30's period music. I'm just really stubborn, and besides, I can't post any hip hop because... I just won't have that rubbish in my house!
So anyway, here's the June…Continue
May, of course, means Mother's Day; but since I don't have any appropriate songs about mothers in my collection, I'll substitute a fine old sentimental number about Grandma, as sung by the immortal Billy Murray. Other than that, though, it's the usual jive, jam, and joviality!

I don't have any candy eggs to put in your Easter baskets, folks, but what I do have is the April Pilsner's Picks. Besides, Popeye wants you to eat your spinach, not rot your teeth with candy!

...so, in honor of the occasion, let's not forget that the Three Stooges were among the great pioneers of Film Noir.
I've been forced into a kind of strange position by the current U.S. copyright law, in that I could get into legal trouble if any eager-beaver attorney thinks that I might have violated it. This law can always be changed arbitrarily, as it's been changed that way so many times before, but never mind that. Most of these ancient 78-rpm records aren't worth legally pursuing over copyrights (even the heirs' children are probably long dead), but if I'm wrong about this, I'm screwed.…Continue
I usually don't post anything on Dieselpunks besides my monthly vintage music link, but this man, starting in the 1940's, molded much of what we think of as the modern world— and he was so shy (maybe even reclusive) that I'd never even heard of him before, even though I had an uncle who worked at Bell Labs during the same era. …
Since another year has gone by without Cupid's arrow piercing my tuchis, Valentine's Day is nothing special to me. However, for those of you who'd like a romantic soundtrack for the occasion, I'm happy to provide it. Yes, it's the Pilsner's Picks Special Valentine Edition!

Popping the cork on another New Year, and I hope it's a bit calmer and less screwy than the last one. Maybe it will be, because at least it's not another U.S, election year. In any case, my very best wishes for 2013 to all you Dieselpunks, Steampunks, and various other types of punks, unless they're Republicans.

So here we have my Xmas stocking-stuffers for all you good boys and girls (I prefer bad girls myself, but that's another subject). If you're sick of the usual Yuletide chestnuts— and who isn't?— try playing some of these at your next holiday party, instead:
I've changed the format a bit this year, mixing in some non-holiday music. That's mainly because I have a limited supply of the…

We interrupt all the recent political and meteorological news for a really important announcement: it's the November Pilsner's Picks!
The leaves are falling, and the old records are calling...
Long-time listeners may notice that I've been concentrating more on the 1920's lately, and not so much on the 30's and 40's. This is because I had another run-in with the Keystone Kopyright Kops, and I'm trying not to tread on their too-sensitive toes. Thanks to the late and unlamented Sonny Bono and his Draconian copyright…
Popeye says, "Oh, hot stuff, eh?" Well, I think so.
