Dieselpunk + Steampunk Culture

Calling all patriotic citizens!  Calling all patriotic citizens!  Your nation needs you!!

The brave soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen can't do it all alone, they need YOU to build the weapons and deliver the supplies that make the war effort WORK.  Housewives, that means you, too.  Time to trade in the apron and spatula for a set of dungarees and a welding torch.  Gramps, I know you served with distinction during the last war, but your arms are needed to turn a wrench.  We need machinists, riviters, welders, farmers, longshoremen...you name it!

Take this lovely young lady, Norma Jean Dougherty, who's assembling OQ-3 Radioplane engines in California.  Sure she could be out enjoying the warm sun and cool waters of the Pacific, but instead she knows that she can help her country's gunners learn how to defend our skies!

But she's not alone.  We've travelled the world over here at the Cabaret in service to the USO and War Bond tours (if you can't spare a hand, Mack, then at least buy War Bonds!!), and we've met plenty of patriotic folks who are lending a hand.  Mrs. Floyd who works in a munitions factory while her husband fights with the SeaBees.  Mr. Cudby in New Zealand who rebuilds trucks for the US Marines.  Mr. Philpott, an engineer with GM.  The good folks at Sheerness Dockyards keeping the Royal Navy afloat.  The ladies building the Sherman tanks...right down to the last seat.  The Special Constables and coast watchers who keep the home front safe.  And far too many more to name, yet all an important and integral part of Victory!

To salute them tonight, we present the Four Vagabonds with their musical celebration of Rosie the Riveter:

Great work, girls! (and guys!)

Even Hollywood is doing its part, providing entertaining films that not only give us all a nice break from the hard days in the factory, foundry, or field, but help remind us Why We Fight!

First up, Daffy's having a rather lousy dream of life under the Swastika and gives the ol' Fuhrer a nice big Heil...right in his face (musical accompaniment by the great - and hilarious - Spike Jones)! [Warning - some Yellowface depictions of Japanese military]

Theig, heil, thith, thuckers!

Next, Larry, Curly, and Moe give the Reich its due in "You Nazty Spies!"

Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk!

Now that's entertainment!

And finally, a toast to all of you working the long, hard hours with a Star Cocktail, because you're all stars in my book!

Star Cocktail:

  • 1 1/2 oz Apple Brandy (aka Applejack)
  • 1 1/2 oz Sweet Vermouth
  • 3 dashes Bitters (Peychaud's or Angostura)
  • 2 dashes Gum Syrup

Stir well over ice, strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a lemon twist.  (For a less-sweet version eliminate the Gum Syrup and lower the amount of Sweet Vermouth or cut with Dry).

Keep on fighting the good fight, everyone, be it with bullets, rivets, or celulose!

Excellent posting as always, Cap'n.

Here's an interview with a real life Rosie the Riveter that many might enjoy.
