Dieselpunk + Steampunk Culture

My friends,

Photo of Tome Wilson at the Race of GentlemenI write to you today from a place of deep sadness and astounding joy for the future. In my 7+ years as Dieselpunks' owner and lead developer I have witnessed the brightest humans in my life refer to me as their friend. I am truly humbled. In honor of these individuals, I have decided to change my focus in the dieselpunk community from online to the real world.

When I created Dieselpunks, my mission was to gather a global artistic community that could one-day advance dieselpunk as a legitimate style of art.

In those early days, Dieselpunks served a vital purpose in the community. I and my friends set aside sleep and sanity to progress the grand mission. We wrote thousands of articles and lectures hoping to crystallize our dreams. Later, we gathered dieselpunks at live events, facilitating relationships that stand true to this day.

In a few short years, the growth of social networks has outpaced our revolution, and dieselpunk artists are now multiplying in the wild. Where I once saw a motley of DIY musicians, cosplayers, and amateur filmmakers, I now see the pilots of an entire genre emerging into pop culture. We’ve become a crowd culture decentralized from a formal structure, and to this end, I feel my mission is complete.

With the mission coming to an end, I have decided to close the Dieselpunks network on June 23rd, 2016.

My passion in life has always been to bring people together, and to that goal I will be focusing my life on real-world impacts:

In my professional career, I will continue in my role as an Art Director and technocrat for the masses. This work is fulfilling because it pushes me to express myself and help humanity. In the past year alone, I've advanced over 10 patents, many that will help the blind and mentally disabled sense the world in ways unimagined just a few years ago.

In my artistic career, I will continue to run my production company, Jazz Age Style. We provide neo-vintage music, live entertainment, and design services for events and nightclubs (1920s - 1940s mixed with a modern edge). By partnering with venues in the Philadelphia area, I've been able to create real retrofuture environments that thousands of guests can experience and enjoy.

In my community, I am in the midst of building a new 3,000sqft non-profit theater to help performers bring live and original work to the public. This space is designed to benefit a community who has never had an opportunity to raise their creative voice to the world. We plan to open later this year with our first show, “The Poe Project.”

In closing, I want to thank the Kickstarter donors who helped keep this machine alive for not just one, but two extra years. I also want to thank the editors and contributors who made Dieselpunks into a place worth visiting every day. Most of all, I want to thank you for helping me accomplish my mission. I hope you remember Dieselpunks as a spark of inspiration and not just another website.

As I leave here today, I want to say one last thing. The goal of technology, especially social networks, is to bring people together, not hide from one another. The next time you have a chance to meet another dieselpunk in the real world, put down your phone and introduce yourself. You never know how long that person will be around.

For the future,

It's a shame to see it go but we've had a good run. Thanks for all your hard work over the years.
